"Music to inspire and nourish the soul."

The Ladder

"The Ladder" was written especially for a Young Women's New Beginnings program. It refers to the analogy of falling into the hole of sin without any way to get out by using only our own efforts. Then, a ladder is lowered into the hole by our Savior—the ladder of the atonement. Now we have means to escape the hole we are in—if we are willing to put forth the effort to climb. This song expresses the hope that Christ's great gift gives to us: that we can escape the bondage of sin, by calling for His help and making use of the precious gift He has already so lovingly and generously given.

Lyrics
The Ladder

There is a sacred ladder that Christ extends to me.
It offers me forgiveness if I climb faithfully.
His ladder of atonement can bring me to His height.
If I climb sure and steady, I will reach my Savior's side.

The ladder goes up, up, up into the sky, sky, sky.
When it gets tough, tough, tough, the harder I try, try, try.
Bravely I climb, climb, climb up t'ward the light, light, light,
So I can be, be, be closer to Christ.

The climb is hard. I'm weary but cling to every rung,
And looking down, I can't believe how far I have come.
I'm making lots of progress in moving t'ward the light,
So I'll keep moving upward ‘though the end is not in sight.

The ladder goes up, up, up into the sky, sky, sky.
When it gets tough, tough, tough, the harder I try, try, try.
Bravely I climb, climb, climb up t'ward the light, light, light,
So I can be, be, be closer to Christ.

There's a hand reaching down to help me when I stumble.
There is someone before me, showing me the way.
There's a glimmer of hope that lights the path before me.
As I move up the ladder, it turns the night to day.

This ladder's very narrow. It's very, very long,
And there are folks below me that I can help along,
So I'll reach out to serve them when they are feeling weak.
I will help them climb like those above have aided me.

The ladder goes up, up, up into the sky, sky, sky.
When it gets tough, tough, tough, the harder I try, try, try.
Bravely I climb, climb, climb up t'ward the light, light, light,
So I can be, be, be closer to Christ.
I long to be closer to Christ.
