"Music to inspire and nourish the soul."

The Pack In

"The Pack In" was written while on a stake summiteer hike that took place in the mountains of Idaho . . . and tells the story of that hike in a humorous, tongue-in-cheek way. For those who are not familiar with summiteer hikes, the trip consisted of packing all the gear, food, and water needed for several days of camping into backpacks and carrying it up steep mountain trails; climbing up some pretty big rocks and rappelling back down; and a whole lot of laughter, beauty, and fun!

Lyrics
The Pack In
The hike started out with much singing and fun,
But some of us started to wonder
If this trip would be more than muscular pain,
Fatigue, and the roar of the thunder.

Food and tent and clothing
Tucked within my pack,
Dishes, pans, and cook stoves,
All upon my back.

When we got to camp, we found Heavenly views,
But soon it was starting to get cool.
We needed a fire, and the wet wood soon blazed
(With help from a gallon of stove fuel.)

Food and tent and clothing
Tucked within my pack,
Dishes, pans, and cook stoves,
All upon my back.

The jays and the bluebirds flew hither and yon.
The chipmunks and squirrels entertained us.
Unpleasantries there, I could think of just two:
Mosquitoes and rocks bit and maimed us.

Food and tent and clothing
Tucked within my pack,
Dishes, pans, and cook stoves,
All upon my back.

The butterflies fluttered. The pine trees were grand.
The mountains with flowers were festooned,
And I'd have been happy if somebody would
Have shown me the way to the restroom!

Food and tent and clothing
Tucked within my pack,
Dishes, pans, and cook stoves,
All upon my back.

The lake was so lovely it gave me great pause——
The water of clear, crystal fountains,
But why did the Lord hide those clean mountain lakes
Way up in the top of the mountains?

Food and tent and clothing
Tucked within my pack,
Dishes, pans, and cook stoves,
All upon my back.

The cliffs were so high, and rappelling was fun,
But one thing could make it much better:
If somebody, someday would figure a way
To put in an "up" escalator!

Food and tent and clothing
Tucked within my pack,
Dishes, pans, and cook stoves,
All upon my back.
